NDC and NPP battle for Assin North seat as EC sets June 27 for the by-election

Image
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) will on June 27, 2023 battle for the Assin North parliamentary seat. The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has settled on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, as the day to hold a  by-election in the Assin North Constituency, barely a month after the Kumawu by-elections. Even before the EC announced the date, the NPP and NDC were in the media claiming to have won the seat in advance, with top officials of either side pitching camp in the Central Regional town of Assin Fosu. The EC has, however explained that holding a by-election in the Constituency has become necessary in fulfillment of law due to the Supreme Court’s declaration that the election of James Gyakye Quayson on December 7, 2020, as Member of Parliament MP for the Constituency is null and void and of no effect. In the press release signed by the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, the commission invited all persons interested in the seat

NPP justifies why Gyakye Quayson’s case isn’t different from Adamu Sakande

Image
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is justifying why embattled former lawmaker for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson should not be treated differently when former lawmaker for Bawku Central, Adamu Dramani Sakande faced the same fate. According to the National Organiser of the NPP, Lawyer Henry Nana Boakye, Mr. Quayson had the opportunity to make his case at the High Court through to the Supreme Court, and not for once did he convince any of the judges he was deserving of staying in parliament. He is at a loss as to why the NDC, whose Attorney General prosecuted Adamu Sakande, is waging an emotional campaign in Assin North because the same courts have applied the law to remove Gyakye Quayson as MP. He swiftly accused his contenders of vote-buying, lamenting how he was denied access to the delegates who had been ‘camped’ by his opponents. Clay Pads:  NGOs lie about Northern Ghana for funding – Development Economist

Image
A Development Economist and a Senior Lecturer at the University for Development Studies(UDS) Dr Michael Ayamga-Adongo has stated that founders and workers of some non-governmental organizations operating in Northern Ghana deliberately falsify information about the area and the impact they( NGOs) are making in the lives of their beneficiaries and divert funds from donors for their personal use. Dr. Ayamga-Adongo explained that such NGOs hire experts and prevail upon them to make recommendations for more funding, which sadly are not put into really positively impacting the lives of their beneficiaries but into the building of hotels and guest houses that serve as meeting grounds for the NGOs themselves. “I got to realize the billions of dollars that come into Ghana through NGOs in the name of developing Northern Ghana. These NGOs take the money and their owners use it to build Hotels and then hire reputable scholars to do the evaluation. When you write the report, they will review

Marijuana can rake more revenue for Ghana than Cocoa – Kofi Akpaloo

Image
Founder of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Mr. Percival Kofi Akpaloo is arguing that marijuana, known in local parlance as ‘Wee,’ has the potential to rake in more revenue for the country than other cash crops. He is therefore advocating for the legalization of marijuana in Ghana as a cash crop and also for industrial purposes. Mr. Kofi Akpaloo argues that the price of marijuana on the international market is far higher than cocoa, the country’s main cash crop cultivated for centuries. The comments from Kofi Akpaloo come days after the Supreme Court, in a majority 5- 4 decision, affirmed its view that the law passed by Parliament allowing the cultivation of weed in Ghana was unconstitutional. This provision stipulated that “the Minister, on the recommendation of the Commission, may grant a license for the cultivation of cannabis popularly referred to as “wee” in Ghana, which is not more than 0.3 % THC content on a dry weight basis for industrial purposes for obtaining fibre o

Chief Justice nominee’s claim that judges don’t get ex gratia false – Prof Azar explains

Image
Lawyer and KPMG Professor of Accounting at the University of Florida Stephen Kwaku Asare( alias Kwaku Azar) has debunked assertions by Chief Justice nominee Gertrude Torkonoo that judges do not receive ex gratia payments as is the case of other workers captured in Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution. Answering a question on the controversial payment of ex gratia, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkonoo emphasized judges do not go have the repetitive cycle that others have that entitles them to the payments. “I think that consistently the Association of Judges and Magistrates have responded to the question of ex-gratia for judges; and made it very clear that judges don’t receive ex-gratia. We continue in the office. We don’t go anywhere until we retire. We don’t have a cycle. And therefore, the discussion of ex-gratia is not at all applicable to us,” she explained. But Prof Kwaku Asare has vehemently disagreed, explaining that judges have been receiving and continue to receive ex gratia ju

Aduana FC’s GPL title hopes suffer major setback after Dreams FC defeat

Image
Aduana FC’s hopes of clinching the Ghana Premier League title were dealt a major blow on Saturday when they lost 1-0 at home to Dreams FC. The defeat has effectively slashed their chances of becoming champions for the third time this season. Following Medeama’s comeback victory over King Faisal the previous day, opening up a four-point lead, Aduana FC needed a win to keep up in the race. Dreams FC emerged triumphant with a decisive goal netted by forward Ali Huzaf in the 54th minute. The win propelled Dreams FC five points clear of the relegation zone, providing them with a much-needed breathing space with just two matches left in the league. The outcome of Medeama’s upcoming fixture against Samartex will determine whether they claim the coveted title. If Medeama emerges triumphant, Aduana Stars will be left to ponder their missed opportunity and contemplate what could have been. Adblock test (Why?)

Anthony Baffoe: Agents should prioritize young players’ development over money

Image
Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe has urged football agents to place importance on the development of young footballers than prioritizing money. Speaking at the launch of the Baby Jet U-16 African Football Tournament earlier this week, Baffoe said that it is essential youngsters to first to comfortable and perform at their best before money. Baffoe suggested that agents should focus on finding the right clubs for a young player, rather than simply trying to get them the biggest contract possible. “That is why they [the players] need good mentoring. When we talk about something, we have experienced it before. I always say there is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs. “They have to be well-managed. For an agent who starts new, who is only looking at the money and not at the development of the player, then there is a problem. “His first mandate should be what is good at that very moment for this young player to establish himself… Managers, people who take
