Bongo: Prof Avea’s vote-buying claims borne out of painful defeat – NDC Secretary
Upper East Region Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Donatus Akamukre has debunked vote-buying claims by Professor Ephraim Nsoh Avea during the Bongo NDC parliamentary primaries, insisting such practices have not come to the attention of the party in the Upper East Region and accusing him of making the allegations out of bitterness following his painful defeat.
Prof Avea, a widely respected academic and NDC heavyweight in the Upper East Region, obtained 75 votes against Edward Bawah, who had 509 votes and the winning candidate Charles Bawadua who obtained 535 votes. He swiftly accused his contenders of vote-buying, lamenting how he was denied access to the delegates who had been ‘camped’ by his opponents.
He detailed how his opponents doled out hefty sums to delegates to ostensibly get them to vote in their favour.
But speaking on Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM, Mr Akamukre dismissed the allegations as being made out of bad faith since the process in the Bongo constituency was credible for him.
“We[ Upper East Region NDC] are saying that we do not have that information on that issue [vote buying]. And that’s why we cannot act on it…When Adu Boahen lost the election, what did he say? He said it was a stolen verdict and the whole NPP and PNC were asked to stay off parliamentary elections in 1992.
So anytime there’s an election and somebody happens not to win, similar allegations arise,” he said.
Meanwhile, Edward Bawah and Charles Bawadua, whom Prof Avea accused of vote-buying, are yet to react to the allegations.
