Sell loss-making SOEs instead of E-levy — Kofi Bentil advises Gov’t

Image
Public-spirited intellectual and Senior Vice President of policy think tank Imani Africa Kofi Bentil has advised the Government to raise revenue through the sale of 50% of loss-making State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) rather than seek to implement the much controversial electronic transactions levy (E-Levy). His suggestion to the Government follows revelations that about 50% of SOEs posted huge losses for the 2020 fiscal year. About half of all State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) posted a ¢5.3 billion loss in their operations in the 2020 fiscal year, the Finance Ministry reported. The solution to this, the Finance Ministry said, will be to cut support to any SOE that report losses. But in the opinion of Mr Bentil, selling them off will ensure that Government raises revenue as well as save money it normally doles out to these inefficient enterprises. “We should sell 50% of all SOEs. We will immediately make money and save money at once. And not need e-levy,” he recommended. The insistenc

Image
Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North Alhaji Alhassan S. Suhuyini has taken on  Professor Stephen Adei for engaging in what he described as partisanship laced dishonesty even though he is supposed to be a statesman, noting that such conduct impedes the ability of younger ones to learn useful lessons from the country’s history . His comment was in reaction to Prof Adei’s praise for the Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyeremanten for having notified him of a job opportunity at the Ghana Institute for Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2001 when the institute needed someone to be its Rector. In the view of Alhaji Suhuyini, Prof Adei’s failure to acknowledge persons who actually facilitated his return to the country and who then appointed him as Rector and then make provision for him to start work at a convenient time is untenable. “Partisanship laced dishonesty of so-called statesmen in this country makes it difficult for younger generations to usefully learn fro

State capture or bold business? Bright Simons asks as McDan defies GACL to open private jet terminal

Image
Technologist and Honorary Vice President of policy think tank Imani Africa Bright Simons has wondered whether the inauguration of the McDan Private Jet Terminal, which will compete with the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) is a bold business move or an example of State capture. His comment comes at a time the GACL has revealed multiple violations by McDan in setting up and inaugurating the private terminal. “This is a very interesting letter. All along, I thought McDan was a concessionaire leasing & operating a private jet terminal from GACL. Turns out they are actually a competitor to GACL, which had its own charter jet plans. I am of 2 minds: bold business or state capture?” Mr Simons tweeted. In a letter signed by the Managing Director of GACL Yaw Kwakwa, it requested McDan Aviation, operators of the private terminal not to go ahead with the inauguration of the facility – the inauguration went ahead anyway – revealing that the company that violated several norms that guid

Heartless thief steals belongings of women on admission in Tamale Central Hospital

Image
Patients in the Female Ward of the Tamale Central Hospital are counting their losses after a thief entered the ward at dawn today, January 30, 2022, and made away with their valuables including phones, ID cards, cash among others. Security lapses may have enabled the suspected thief to enter the facility unnoticed and exit with the booty without a hindrance. According to Dr Seidu Fiter, a medic and philanthropist, security in the hospital is in a deplorable state and needs to be addressed urgently. “This is not the first of its kind, workers have lost their motorbikes and other valuables to criminals. Infact almost all wards at the facility do not have their television sets intact because they have been removed by thieves in the night. This is all down to poor leadership at the facility and lack of SECURITY! No security at the main entrances of the facility, no fenced wall and no properly regulated visiting hours at the facility. Now my fear and that of other right-thinking people

Image
Anti-corruption campaigner and former Chairman of the Public Interest And Accountability Committee ( PIAC) Dr Steve Manteaw has said that seeking a programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is what will instill sanity into the management of Ghana’s economy, then it should be sought. For Dr Manteaw, who has expertise in Public Policy and Communication Strategy, the Government’s refusal to take into consideration concerns raised about the implementation of free Senior High School ( SHS), the incidence of corruption and profligacy of the President is to blame for the current predicament of the Ghanaian economy which the Government hopes to resolve through the collection of the Electronic Transactions Levy ( E-Levy). Government functionaries, notably the Finance Minister and the Information Minister, have warned that the Government would be left with no option but to go to the IMF for money if the E-Levy it intends to pass into law and implement fails to go through. “If it w

No credible research to back claim that Ghanaians are against E-Levy – Dr Stephen Amoah

Image
Member of Parliament(MP) for the Nhyiaeso Constituency, Ashanti Region Dr Stephen Amoah has debunked assertions that most Ghanaians are against Government’s move to implement the electronic transactions levy (E-Levy), stressing that there is no acceptable research that points to the claim that Ghanaians are unwilling to pay the E-Levy. Speaking Saturday, January 29, 2022, on Multimedia’s Newsfile, Dr Amoah conceded that even though citizens are usually averse to the payment of taxes, the notion that Ghanaians are generally against the E-Levy is false. “In any case, there is nowhere in the world that any individual is interested in paying taxes which will have an impact on the person’s disposal income. So people who are saying that “Ghanaians are not happy”, since when Ghanaians have shown so happy with it. And who has done practically acceptable research with sample sizes and other things to show that we can extrapolate and say that over 15 million Ghanaians out of over 31 million,

Mr Adams, known for his matter-of-fact opinions on sports issues, wondered how local coaches, described by Government and GFA officials as not being good enough, can be as good foreign coaches when the Government and GFA don’t do what can build their capacity. “When I hear some Govt and FA officials say: Local coaches are not good. Local coaches are not competent enough to manage the Black Stars. Local coaches are weak. Me: But when you appoint them, you don’t pay them for years. You want GPRTU and TEWU to build their capacities for them?” He quizzed.
