John Dumelo advises gov’t on e-levy; says it would be counterproductive

Renowned Ghanaian Actor now turned Politician John Dumelo has expressed worry over Government’s insistence on introducing e-levy.

He said although Domestic revenue generation is good, the implementation of the e-levy will be counterproductive.

John Dumelo insist the implementation of e-levy will lead to the collapse of jobs and the financial inclusion the country seeks will not be achieved.

John who made this known in a tweet said “Domestic revenue generation is good, but the implementation of the e-levy will be counterproductive. We will not attain a cashless economy, jobs will be lost, financial inclusion will not be achieved. Solution”.

He suggested that “Solution; e-levy at one per cent( great contribution to fiscal consolidation), minimum threshold should be at least 200gh”.

The Government of Ghana in its 2022 budget indicated that it will introduce the e-levy to help in the mobilization of revenue.

The move according to government will shore up its fiscal deficit as citizens will be taxed 1.75% on mobile money transactions.

The move was opposed by the Minority in Parliament such that it wasn’t approved in 2021 and is expected to be reintroduced in Parliament as government also begins Town Hall Meetings to elicit public concerns and educate the public on the bill.
