Marijuana can rake more revenue for Ghana than Cocoa – Kofi Akpaloo
Founder of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Mr. Percival Kofi Akpaloo is arguing that marijuana, known in local parlance as ‘Wee,’ has the potential to rake in more revenue for the country than other cash crops.
He is therefore advocating for the legalization of marijuana in Ghana as a cash crop and also for industrial purposes.
Mr. Kofi Akpaloo argues that the price of marijuana on the international market is far higher than cocoa, the country’s main cash crop cultivated for centuries.
The comments from Kofi Akpaloo come days after the Supreme Court, in a majority 5- 4 decision, affirmed its view that the law passed by Parliament allowing the cultivation of weed in Ghana was unconstitutional.
This provision stipulated that “the Minister, on the recommendation of the Commission, may grant a license for the cultivation of cannabis popularly referred to as “wee” in Ghana, which is not more than 0.3 % THC content on a dry weight basis for industrial purposes for obtaining fibre or seed for medicinal purposes.”
However, in a 4-3 majority decision, the Apex court annulled this provision and declared that it violates Article 106 of the 1992 constitution.
Speaking on Hello FM in an interview, the outspoken politician stressed the need for Ghana to legalize the cultivation of marijuana for both export and industrial purpose.
“Marijuana needs to be legalized because there is price in it. At the most, a one-acre of cocoa farm can only yield ten bags, but marijuana on that same land size will yield 100 bags. On the international market, 1 kilo of cocoa is $10 but 1 kilo of marijuana is $1000, so you see the gab”, Mr Kofi Akpaloo told Hello FM.
