Ghana Premier League: Karela United hold Asante Kotoko to draw

In an intense encounter at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Karela United fought back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Monday afternoon in Matchweek 32 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

The draw had implications for both teams’ standings in the league. Asante Kotoko, with the point earned, climbed from fifth to fourth place in the league table, now boasting 48 points. Meanwhile, Karela United maintained their 16th position, with 41 points, remaining in the relegation places.

Right from the kickoff, the game displayed a highly competitive nature, with both teams showing great determination. However, the intensity resulted in early cautions, with Rocky Dwamena of Asante Kotoko receiving a yellow card and Dafie Humin Mohammed of Karela United also being booked, all within the first 15 minutes of the match.

It was Asante Kotoko who broke the deadlock, taking the lead in the 29th minute. A well-executed cross from the right side led to a save by the Karela United goalkeeper, but unfortunately for his team, Rashid Mohammed inadvertently directed the ball into his own net, handing Asante Kotoko the advantage.

As the first half drew to a close, Asante Kotoko held onto their one-goal lead, thanks to the own goal scored by Karela United’s Rashid Mohammed.

However, the visitors refused to accept defeat and mounted a spirited comeback in the second half. Determined to salvage a result, Karela United pushed forward, seeking the elusive equalizer. Their efforts paid off in the 75th minute when Fatawu Mohammed found the back of the net, leveling the game at 1-1.
