NDC and NPP battle for Assin North seat as EC sets June 27 for the by-election
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) will on June 27, 2023 battle for the Assin North parliamentary seat. The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has settled on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, as the day to hold a by-election in the Assin North Constituency, barely a month after the Kumawu by-elections. Even before the EC announced the date, the NPP and NDC were in the media claiming to have won the seat in advance, with top officials of either side pitching camp in the Central Regional town of Assin Fosu. The EC has, however explained that holding a by-election in the Constituency has become necessary in fulfillment of law due to the Supreme Court’s declaration that the election of James Gyakye Quayson on December 7, 2020, as Member of Parliament MP for the Constituency is null and void and of no effect.
