AFCON 2023: “We made silly mistakes” – Mohammed Kudus lashes out
Mohammed Kudus has said ‘silly mistakes’ and ‘lack of concentration’ caused the Black Stars capitulation in the 2-2 draw with Mozambique.
Ghana are all but out of the Africa Cup of Nations after failing to win any of their group stage matches, ending with two points.
On Monday, the Black Stars played out a disgraceful 2-2 draw in their last group game against Mozambique in Abidjan.
Ghana took a commanding 2-0 lead, thanks to Jordan Ayew’s two penalties which he expertly converted.
But the Black Stars conceded two goals in stoppage time, to throw away the kead.
The first came through a penalty for an Andre Ayew handball in the 91st minute, while the second was a Reinildo header from a corner which goalkeeper Richard Ofori inexplicably conceded.
Speaking at full time, a teary Mohammed Kudus said the players had themselves to blame.
“In games like this, it’s just small margins, the little things. Keep your focus throughout the whole game. We gave away two cheap goals; against Egypt the same thing. We just lost our concentration in the last minute of the game.
“Today was an easy win for us. Just keep it like that till the end of the game. We were just too sloppy, two silly mistakes. This game was too easy,” he said while wiping tears from his face.
Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde in the group’s other match means Ghana are now in third place with two points.
Cape Verde finish as group winners with seven points, while Egypt finish in second place with three points.
There is a slim chance, however, that Ghana qualifies.
Currently ranked 5th among the 3rd place teams, Ghana can only qualify if Zambia, Algeria, Cameroon all lose their last group games.
Cameroon face Gambia, Algeria face Mauritania and Zambia face DR Congo.
