Achimota School becomes Rasta student’s biggest cheerleader after initially rejecting him
Achimota School has become an enthusiastic supporter of the successes being chalked by Rastafarian student Tyrone Iras Marhguy, whom the school had initially denied admission based on his dreadlocks but had to admit him on the orders of a High Court.
The gifted Marhguy after obtaining an A1 in all the eight subjects he took at the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as well as excelling at the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), had Achimota School publicly congratulating him and wishing him well in his endeavours.
Several weeks later, the school congratulated him for winning gold at the 2023 American Mathematics Olympiad as the 2023 Overall National Top Scorer as well as silver at the Vanda Science International Olympiad.
“He DID IT AGAIN!!!! Congratulations Akora Tyrone Marhguy. He has earned two awards from the American Mathematics Olympiad 2023 for his outstanding achievements in Grade 12.
Marhguy was crowned the 2023 overall national top scorer, earning the gold medal, after competing with over 150,000 students across the globe. He was also awarded the Vanda Science International Olympiad in the Silver category out of 38,000 test-takers.
He has officially been inducted into the International Junior Honour Society, 2023.Ayekoo,” the school wrote on social media following the ceremony at which he was awarded.
Achimota School in 2021 initially refused to enrol Marhguy as its student because of his dreadlocks, a manifestation of his Rastafarian religion, but a High Court in May 2021 compelled the school to enrol him. Tyrone Iras Marhguy made national and international news as a result.
The school was heavily criticised for refusing to admit him. Now though the school has taken pride in the extraordinary achievements of Master Marhguy, regularly congratulating him and wishing him well. They are, arguably, his biggest cheerleader.
