North East: Renewed chieftaincy clashes in Chereponi claims four lives

A Chieftaincy dispute between two communities in the Chereponi District of the North East Region which has been smoldering for some years now resulted in a bloody clash on Monday, November 20, 2023, leaving at least four persons dead and one person severely injured.

The two communities at the centre of the conflict clashed on Monday when a Chief of one of the communities came under attack by some members of the other community.

According to the District Chief Executive of Chereponi, Hajia Nashiru Zuweira, two women and two men lost their lives during the fight on Monday. She added that calm had been restored to the district.

“There was a clash during the day. We lost four lives, that is the report that I had. And we have lost two women and two men. And then one is seriously injured and has been referred to the hospital in Sansanmango. Currently, the place is relatively calm because it has been beefed up with security. A good number of police, a good number of military, and then there is an amoured car doing patrols over there,” the DCE told journalists.

The renewed clash has left many residents frightened and calling on the security agencies to work to restore peace to the area.
