Cote d’Ivoire 2023: Ampem Darkoa Ladies qualify for CAF Champions League

Ghana Women’s Premier League champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies have secured a slot in next season’s CAF Women’s Champions League after winning the WAFU Zone B Champions League Qualifiers.

”Nana Mma”, as they are affectionately called, progressed to the tournament that will be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire following a 1-0 win over Nigeria’s Delta Queens in Benin City, Nigeria.

Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah scored the game’s decisive goal when she headed home a rebound after 42 minutes. Having scored in the semifinal, her goal in the final took her tournament tally to two goals.

After the interval, Delta Queens threw everything at Ampem Darkoa in a desperate attempt to restore parity. However, Ampem Darkoa’s organization and calmness at the rear ensured they were able to repel the Queens attacks.

For her stellar performance, Ampem Darkoa’s Nancy Amoh was adjudged the Woman of the Match while teammate Mary Amponsah emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with 8 goals in 4 matches.

Ampem Darkoa are second time lucky after failing to secure qualification last year when they lost to Bayelsa Queens in the final.

Ampem Darkoa joins Hasaacas Ladies as the second Ghanaian team to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League. In their only appearance, Hasaacas Ladies went all the way the final before losing 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s Sporting Casablanca are also through after winning the Union of North African Football Federation region championship qualifiers.

The Moroccans thrashed Egypt’s Wadi Degla 6-1 on the last day of the tournament.

On Wednesday, Tanzanian club JKT Queens also qualified for the tournament to after beating Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank 5-4 on penalties in the CECAFA regional qualifiers .

The CAF Women’s Champions League Cote d’Ivoire 2023 will run from 05 to 19 November.
