Ghana still owes Milovan Rajevac and C.K Akonnor – Sports Minister
Ghana’s Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has confirmed government is yet to pay debts owed former Black Stars head coaches Milovan Rajevac and Charles Kwablan Akonnor.
Speaking at a press briefing today, Mustapha Ussif clarified that the Ministry paid $100, 000 to each coach shortly after their appointments were terminated.
“We still owe Milovan [Rajevac],” he said at a press briefing. All of C.K and Milovan, once their contract was terminated, we sat with them, negotiated their exit and C.K was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation same as Milovan.”
“We still owe both of them and we have payment scheduled which I will admit we have not followed because of constraints of funds. As and when we get funds, we will be paying the two coaches.” He said.
He also added that both coaches have planned to take the matter to court.
“Both of them have written to the Ghana Football Association threatening to go to court,” he continued.
“We have appealed to them that we are committed to making sure we settle whatever we have agreed with them.”
C.K Akonnor was hired as Black Stars coach following expiration of Kwasi Appiah’s contract in December 2019. After a slow start and a defeat to South Africa in the World Cup Qualifiers, the former Black Stars captain was fired. He was later replaced by Milovan Rajevac.
Milovan Rajevac returned to coach the Black Stars for a second spell in September 2021 during the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
However, it was a short experience as he was fired after superintending over Ghana’s worst showing at the African Cup of Nations; a winless campaign that ended with a bottom place finish.
The Black Stars have since been under the management of Otto Addo and Chris Hughton after the previous two.
