Finance Minister can’t be removed now – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explains
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta cannot be removed from office as demanded by some of his colleague Members of Parliament(MPs).
According to the MP for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Ghana’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program are still ongoing, hence it is not possible for Ken Ofori-Atta to go.
The lawmaker was reacting to fresh calls by some Members of Parliament for the removal of the Finance Minister as promised by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In 2022, Some Majority Members of Parliament asked President Akufo-Addo to remove the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta
The move, the group said could help restore confidence in the Ghanaian economy as some investors were shying away as a result of his presence.
The majority also threatened they will not participate in any government business including the budget hearing until their demands were met.
However, President Akufo-Addo responding to their demand promised he will sack the minister as soon as the IMF deal is done.
However, speaking on Kumasi-based Hello FM on Monday, July 31, 2023, Hon Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu hinted that, the recent call on the President cannot be met because the negotiations are still ongoing.
“Just recently the same issue was popping up so I met with them again and told them there is more for the Minister to do. Though the Cedi is gaining strength, the main negotiation with the IMF hasn’t ended yet. Even with this mid-year budget review, they (IMF) are still trying to find out if it will fit into our economy. So in the month of August, they will come again for another review”. Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed
“After the first $ 600 million we received, there is a second tranche coming and that will depend on their August review”, he stated.
He further revealed that, after meeting with the Majority caucus and considering the negotiations ongoing, they’ve come to a conclusion to allow the Finance Minister Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta to continue with his work.
