According to him, out of the 1,970 inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons, for example, more than 1,500 are youth ranging between the ages of 18 to 45.

“Out of the 1,970, there are over 1,500 inmates are in their youthful age”, Superintendent Richard Bukari bemoaned while speaking to  Angel Breaking News on Friday afternoon adding that “it is worrying”.

The Senior Prisons Officer also revealed that the Kumasi Central prison with a capacity of 450 inmates now houses over 1,970 people, resulting in congestion among other challenges to both inmates and service personnel.

He further confirmed that speculations in public that suggest the country’s prisons are overcrowded with inmates are true.

According to him, most of the convicts are serving various terms in prison for robbery and stealing.
