Black Meteors secure U23 Africa Cup of Nations spot with Issahaku’s goal vs Algeria

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku’s goal proved to be the difference maker as Ghana’s U23 football team, the Black Meteors, secured their place in this year’s U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Sporting CP winger was on the receiving end of a superb cross from Ernest Nuamh, which he slotted home to give Ibrahim Tanko’s side a hard-earned victory at the Baba Yara Stadium.

From the onset, the Black Meteors looked the more threatening team, with Tanko making some tactical changes to the starting lineup that featured in their previous game against Annaba. They controlled both halves of the game and created numerous opportunities to score.

Nuamh was in excellent form, causing problems for the Algerians with his surging runs from the left flank. It was one of these runs that led to the goal, as he beat an opponent before setting up Issahaku for the opener just 12 minutes into the game.

Issahaku had a few more chances to extend the lead for the Black Meteors, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Despite their missed chances, Tanko’s team maintained their intensity in the second half, but couldn’t add to their tally.

Danlad Ibrahim, who had put in a heroic performance in the previous game, was once again impressive in goal, helping Ghana secure their spot in the U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

The U23 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Egypt from June 20 to July 10, 2023, and will serve as a qualifying event for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, with the top three teams earning spots in the tournament.
