Lionel Messi named men’s player of the year at Best Fifa Awards
Lionel Messi, the Argentina and Paris St-Germain forward, has clinched the highly coveted title of men’s player of the year at the 2022 Best Fifa Awards held in Paris on Monday.
The 35-year-old football superstar, who had previously won the award in 2019, outshone his competitors, the French forwards Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema, to clinch the prize.
Messi’s remarkable performance during the 2021-22 season, which included captaining Argentina to their third World Cup title in Qatar and scoring 27 goals in 49 games for club and country, earned him the prestigious award.
In his acceptance speech, Messi expressed his gratitude towards his teammates and recognized their immense contribution towards his triumph, stating, “Without my teammates, I wouldn’t be here.”
As part of the awards ceremony, Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was named women’s player of the year, while Lionel Scaloni, who led Argentina to their third World Cup title, was crowned men’s coach of the year.
Scaloni won the title, beating out his competitors, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, despite Guardiola guiding Manchester City to their sixth Premier League title and Ancelotti leading Real Madrid to a Champions League victory.
The Best Fifa Awards, held annually, celebrate and acknowledge the outstanding performance of players, coaches, and teams in international football.
