NDC loses double in Techiman South election petition
The opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has not only lost in its right to contest the legitimacy of Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah as validly elected Member of Parliament(MP) for Techiman South Constituency in the Bono East Region, the party has also been slapped with a fine.
At the Wenchi High Court on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 presided over by Mr. Justice Fredrick Arnold Nawura where a ruling was given on the over two-year battle, describing the petition as frivolous and maintained the Deputy Minister was properly elected in the 2020 polls.
Accordingly, a fine of GHc100, 000 was slapped on Christopher Bayere Baasongti and the NDC as cost by the defendant.
It would be recalled that the NDC claimed the Electoral Commission (EC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) connived to deny them the Techiman South seat which it won with over 700 votes.
The largest opposition party allegedly provided evidence to back its claims that the party’s candidate Christopher Bayere Baasongti won the seat from the NPP.
There were concerns raised by section of Ghanaians that the NDC’s Parliamentary candidate for Techiman South’s figures on Joy News differed from that which were presented by the party in Parliament.
But the NPP maintained its candidate and current Member of Parliament (MP) Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah was legally elected as announced by the Electoral Commission, accusing the NDC of engaging in propaganda.
Electoral Commission also insisted Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah polled 49,682 votes as against 49,205 votes for Christopher Beyere for the NDC.
