2022 World Cup: Resilient USA hold England
England laboured to a dull draw with the Americans, missing the opportunity to lock up qualification for the World Cup knockout round.
For lengthy stretches, Gareth Southgate’s team trailed the USA, who are also hoping to advance to the round of 16, but they were unable to match their zeal and commitment.
Despite having an excellent defence led by Harry Maguire, England was lacklustre and relied on luck in the first half when Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar and Weston McKennie missed a simple opportunity.
Just before halftime, Mason Mount forced a fine save from USA goalkeeper Matt Turner, but this was an unremarkable performance that lacked the attacking ferocity that helped the Three Lions thrash Iran in their opening match, leaving them with an uncertain future going into their match against Wales.
England is still the clear favourite to go to the knockout round since they only need to avoid losing to Wales by four goals.
