2022 World Cup: Mohammed Kudus makes history with South Korea brace
On Monday, Mohammed Kudus made a new record by becoming the first Ghanaian player to score two goals in a Fifa World Cup match.
The 22-year-old midfielder scored twice as the Black Stars defeated South Korea in a thrilling 3-2 contest at Education City Stadium, giving them a boost going into their final game at Qatar 2022.
Ghana had a total of 15 goals in World Cup history going into their second encounter in Group H, with no player scoring more than one goal per game.
The Black Stars took the lead in the 24th minute when center-back Mohammed Salisu tucked in a Jordan Ayew free-kick.
Kudus then made the first of three Ghanaian and African football records on the day ten minutes later with a glancing header from another Jordan Ayew cross, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead at the half.
After Ahmed Musa of Nigeria, Kudus became the second-youngest African scorer in the World Cup thanks to the first goal.
Cho Guesung’s double, though, helped South Korea tie the score in just three minutes at the hour mark.
Midway through the second half, Kudus added another goal for Ghana to make the score 3-2.
The Ajax star therefore made history by becoming the first Ghanaian to net two goals in a World Cup game. He also made history by becoming the second-youngest African player to score twice in a match.
After reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, the Black Stars held on to win their first World Cup match. This sets up a tight final group stage matchup on Friday, December 2, against Uruguay, the team that controversially eliminated Ghana 12 years ago.
Ghana now controls its own World Cup destiny; a victory or a draw at Al Janoub Stadium would see coach Otto Addo’s team advance to the round of 16. The game begins at 15:30 GMT.
