Retired Deputy GES Boss has ‘critical experience’ urgently needed — Min. of Education justifies contract

The Ministry of Education has called the bluff of Union Executives who are up in arms the grant of contract to retired and retiring Senior officials of the Ghana Education Service.

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo had upon a request from the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum granted a request to give a contract extension to a Deputy GES Director General, Anthony Boateng.

Teacher unions made up of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Ghana National Association of Teachers, Teachers and Educational Workers Union and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers said the extension made at the request of the Minister for Education will not be accepted.

During the period of extension, Mr. Boateng was expected to continue his current role and assist in the development of the Ministry’s National Education Institute.

However, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Yaw Opoku Mensah said the government is not obliged to heed to the union’s calls.

“Within this critical period, we need experienced hands like that to be able to ensure that you carry out the reforms that are needed for the betterment of our education system.”

“Within the legal provisions and without expertise, nobody within the system questions his ability to finish what we started together,” he added.

The Teacher Unions have said they will lay down their tools if this situation continue or persist. They have called on the President and the Minister to what they describe as “the needful”.
