Teachers, students running away from teaching and learning of literature- Lecturer

A Senior Lecturer at the Department of English of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Samuel Kwesi Nkansah has revealed that teachers and students of various Senior High Schools (SHSs) are running away from teaching and learning literature respectively as if there is no value for the subject

He underscored the significance of literature explaining that it is one of the subjects that emphasizes on critical and logical thinking.

“One of the avenues of achieving critical thinking and logical reasoning is through literature and creative writing”, Prof Kwesi Nkansah revealed.

Speaking at an awards ceremony for the 3 finalists and 6 Semi-finalists who participated in the Adwowa Gyaaba Memorial Essay Writing Competition for upper primary pupils in Anomabo/Yamoransa Circuits, he admonished teachers to do their best to encourage their students to develop the skills of writing

“Don’t expect the school kids to be experts just at the beginning, they will progress through direction and lecturing them” he appealed and urged the teachers to revamp the habit of reading and creative writing in schools.

On her part, an Author and Director of Ghana Education Staff Development Institute (GESDI) at Saltpond, Mrs. Eva Gyina Bediako charged parents to stop buying expensive dresses and shoes for their kids but rather buy more reading materials for them to use to upgrade their writing and reading skills.

She was impressed with the Anomabo Boys and Girls Club for organizing an awards programme in the Creative Writing Competition for pupils.
