Poverty major cause of high blood pressure – Nursing Lecturer
A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Nursing and Midwifery Dr. Cecilia Ackah Eliason has indicated that a major cause of high blood pressure is poverty.
She says there are studies to back her claim that people with low socioeconomic backgrounds have high blood pressure.
Dr. Cecilia Eliason was speaking on Ghana Television (GTV) when she made this known.
Apart from poverty, she noted that one’s environment, age and marital issues are also major causes of high blood pressure.
She, however, indicates that it’s imperative that people diagnosed of the sickness change their lifestyles and stick to taking their medication because that’s how they can live long and healthy.
“financial issues and all that. Studies also have found out that, those of us from low socio-economic background have high what, incidents of high blood pressure”, she said.
” Your age as you age your BP increases and then your environment. There can be issues like marital issues”, she added.
“Ooh, if you are diagnosed hypertensive and you make sure you take your drugs, you go by changing your lifestyle, you are able to maintain your body weight with time, and your BP keeps maintaining at the low blood pressure, it is just that they maybe reduce the dosage of your drugs but to take you off no…. because if you take them off, you don’t know, there are risk factors”, she advised.
