Names of Achimota Forest Land grabbers start dropping
The name of the late Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie and former Director of Operations of the Commission Charles Owusu have been named as some of the beneficiaries of lands at the Achimota Forest.
MyNewsGh.com has however stumbled upon a document suggesting these two individuals are only a fraction of the total of over 50 beneficiaries of lands in the area after its reclassification.
If the list in possession of this portal is anything to go by then the names of the two persons who are card-bearing members of the current administration is just the tip of the iceberg as some persons including officials of government, some through their assignees are neck-deep in the land grabbing.
Sources reveal that 361 acres of Forest Reserve land have been reclassified for redevelopment and use but only allowed 120 acres are to be given to the Owoo family.
This leaves over 240 acres that are being sold to cronies and relatives of the current administration through the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor when the matter broke out claimed the 92-year-old Forest is not for sale and has not been sold.
Currently, the Achimota Forest Reserve boasts of approximately 5.23km² of land according to the Digital Observatory for Protected Areas DOPA under the European Union Commission and when the Achimota Forest was gazetted in 1930 by Ghana’s Colonial authorities as a reserve, it had a total size of 494.95 hectares.
Section 19 of the Forestry Act 1927 grants the President of Ghana the right to de-designate a land classified as a Forest Reserve for any other use he/she considers fit.
