NPP 2024: Who’ll vice whom? – ‘Kufour faction’ boss rejects Bawumia-Alan ticket

A key player of the supposed ‘Kufuor faction’ within the New Patriotic Party who served as Chief of Staff in the Kufour administration, Kojo Mpiani, has promptly rejected any suggestion of a Bawumia-Alan ticket for the NPP in 2024.

His reaction follows a proposal by Nana Akomea, a former member of parliament and a leading communications member of the governing NPP who suggested that a Bawumia-Alan ticket is the sure way for the NPP to go into Election 2024.

Akomea who joined the likes of Frank Annor Dompreh who made similar proposals said it was clear that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen are the two frontrunners to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the two could work together.

Earlier, The Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency, Frank Annor Dompreh joined calls for the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Kwadwo Alan Kyeremanteng to run a single ticket in the 2024 elections.

According to him, he is ready to support such an agenda as the party laces its boots to stay onto power in 2024.

Annor Dompreh made this known in a tweet in December 2021.

While no one has mentioned who will Vice whom in the ticket, it is a forgone conclusion by analysts that Alan Kyeremateng will ‘vice’ Dr. Bawumia because the latter would have already served 8 years as Vice President and ineligible for another term as number 2 again.

However, Kojo Mpiani who is considered a kingpin of the ‘Kufour faction’ in the NPP and whose backing Alan Kyeremateng has enjoyed since 2007 believes a Bawumia-Alan ticket will be a problem.

“The problem as I [Mpiani] see it here is that, who is going to be the presidential candidate and who is going to be a running mate?”

He suggested that Alan Kyeremateng may have his ambition to be President which has nothing to do with a Vice Presidential dream.

“And in politics also, we all have our ambitions. Maybe it is my ambition to be a president not a vice-president. And so why do you bring [me], because I’m trying to contest to be a presidential candidate, why do you join me with another person for me to become say, a vice-presidential candidate

So I don’t know, it is easier said than done. Ambitions in politics is different. Somebody wants to be a minister, somebody wants to be a vice-president.”

“Somebody’s ambition is to become a president. And if his ambition is to become a president, maybe, if you suggest to him to become a running mate which will make him a vice-president, he will say thank you, I’m not interested. So that is the way I see it.”

Mr Mpiani said.
