Every ‘true’ Ghanaian must understand Twi – Ewe Immigration Officer Dela Atieku at Passport Office
An Immigration officer, Wilson Dela Atieku who is stationed at the Tema Passport Office has declared that every Ghanaian who was born and bred within the boundaries of Ghana must, as a matter of fact, be able to speak Twi otherwise the person’s nationality is suspect.
This comes after persons of Ewe extraction lament the fact that their Ghanaian citizenship is questioned anytime they are unable to speak Twi and are accused of being Togolese for lack of Twi.
The Ewe officer Dela Atieku who has been exposed to be using the “Twi test” at the passport Office in Tema is reportedly doing so with the support and connivance and encouragement of top officials of the Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Wilson Dela Atieku who was enlisted into the Immigration in 2019. Dela Atieku who was vetting the nationality of one Maryam Suleman, daughter of a popular Muslim Cleric in Kumasi doubted her nationality because she did not speak Twi and didn’t understand any word of Twi or any other Southern language except Hausa for that matter.
Persons familiar with the development said the Passport Immigration Officer doubted her Ghanaian citizenship first because she was in veil as a Muslim and secondly because she couldn’t speak Twi when he started interrogating her in that language to test her “Ghanaianness”.
He ask her why she can’t speak or understand any word of Twi if she is indeed a Ghanaian.
The incident happened inside Tema Passport Office on the 16th February 2022 after Maryam Suleman went there to renew her passport as a Ghanaian born in Kumasi at Doctor Osei Clinic near Ali And Dauda’s House with both parents being Ghanaians and well-known in the Ashanti Region for over 75 years.
Dela Atieku “Laptop” as he is known by his colleagues who say they are not surprised he is the one caught in the situation said he interrogated Ms Suleman for more than 4 hours and she became tired and exhausted and requested to leave.
He forcefully restrained her and put his hand brazier to take her phone after beating her up and dragging her on the floor of the Tema Passport Office undue the watch of the Director and other officer who said and did nothing.
MyNewsGh.com understands that days later top officers got involved and issued her a passport immediately after confirming she is indeed a Ghanaian after the incident went viral.
