A/R: Police detain 73-year old man for 6 days; take GhC2k bribe and impounds his car
A 73-year old driver who was arrested by the police in Adankwame in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti region in December has claimed that he was detained in cells for 6 days and forced to pay a bribe of GHC 2,100 before he was released.
Haruna Seidu says he was arrested for carrying 4 sheep and goats which were allegedly stolen by his passenger from his father’s farm at a village near Kunsu in the Ahafo Ano South West District.
Speaking in an interview with Ali Baba Dankambary on Kumasi-based Angel FM on Wednesday afternoon, Haruna said the livestock he was transporting were also seized alongside his vehicle by Adama Boahen, the policeman who arrested him.
“He put me in the cell and demanded that if I was able to pay him GHC 2000, he would release me and hand over the car and the animals back to me. It took me 6 days before I could raise the money through a friend who sent it in bits over the period.
He released me on the sixth day but refused to give me the car and the animals as he promised; he gave me his number but warned me never to call him. As I speak, they’re demanding another GHC 2000 before they would release the far to me”, he said.
The father of 8 also claimed that he was starved by the police officers; it took the intervention of other inmates to get him fed whiles in custody.
He called on the top hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service to intervene in the matter.
