UTAG temporarily calls off its strike action

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have temporarily called off its industrial action.

This was after an Executive Committee Meeting held at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Monday evening the deliberate on pleas by some respected individuals and institutions in the country.

The suspension according to a statement from the Union is to pave way for further negotiations for better condition of service for members of UTAG.

The suspension is, however, pending the approval of members of the Union.

“Per section 4(b) of the UTAG’s constitution, our members have five days to vote to accept or reject this decision. We hope serious ovatures are made to convince members.”

Meanwhile, the legal processes on the legality of their industrial action will continue.

UTAG has been on strike since January 10 to demand better conditions of service.

It’s meetings with the government has since that period ended in stalemate since it could not reach a compromise with the government.

The National Labour Commission after the union went on strike run to the court to place an injunction on the union because to the NLC their action is illegal; an injunction which was granted by the court.

However, UTAG filed a stay of execution on the ruling of the court on the matter but has called on the strike albeit temporarily to make teachers go back to the classroom whiles negotiations continue.
