Probe source of Chief of Staff’s “bribe” to Adwoa Safo – Asiedu Nketia
General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has called for a probe into monies paid by the Chief of Staff to the Minister of Gender, Women, Children and Social Protection.
Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong in an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio alleged that he was given an amount of 120,000 to be deposited into the Fidelity Bank Account of Adwoa Safo.
He said even after paying the amount, the Member of Parliament has still not appeared in Parliament to support the party passing the e-levy.
Reacting to the allegation by Kennedy Agyapong, Asiedu Nketia indicated that the probe should begin with investigating the currency the Member of Parliament was given to understand the amount of money that changed hands.
“There should be an investigation on what the money was meant for. We should know whether it was a bribe or it was the MP’s salary. We also need to know whether the Chief of Staff owed the MP money and she was paying her”.
He continued “we also need to know where the money is from. Is it from Maame Frema’s account and if it’s her personal fund, does she carry that amount of money to the office every day?”
Asiedu Nketia said it is worrying that an elected Member of Parliament should be paid such huge sums of money before she agrees to come to Parliament to do her work.
“What kind of corruption is this? This is why I say we should probe this because we want to know whether it was a loan or it was a bribe. If the government that is preaching a cashless system pays money in cash then it’s worrying.”
Asiedu Nketia said if the country was serious with the fight against corruption, anti-corruption agencies would have called the people involved by now and would have started dealing with them.
