No train conveying Ghanaians was shot in Ukraine – Foreign Minister debunks Ablakwa
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has debunked claims by Member of Parliament(MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, that a train conveying some Ghanaian students was attacked by Russians in Ukraine, MyNewsGh.com reports.
The Ministry cautioned the NDC MP to desist from sensationalism on the very important issue at stake.
Mr. Ablakwa who was speaking on TV3/3FM with Dzifa Bampoh on Saturday, February 26 while commenting on the decision by the Government of Ghana to evacuate Ghanaian students from Ukraine said a bus conveying Ghanaians was shot at by Russians but thankfully no one was hurt.
Reacting to the matter, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said it is important to steer clear of unconfirmed and sensational reports due to the delicate times.
“We wish to use this platform to debunk the unsubstantiated reports, such as one alleging that a bus conveying some Ghanaians to the eastern part of Ukraine was shot at. At such delicate times such as this, let us all endeavour to steer clear of sensationalism and unconfirmed reports that only serve to heighten tensions at these times” she said.
She added that efforts are ongoing to evacuate more Ghanaians from Ukraine.
“Our Diplomatic missions in Bern, Ankara, Prague, Moscow, and the Vatican are working around the clock in a coordinated manner to secure the safety at all times of our citizens and their evacuation. As stated earlier, I have ordered the despatch of officers of some of our Diplomatic Missions to meet with our citizens who are being evacuated to facilitate the processes and handle any outstanding challenges.”
“Together we can do this. I would use this medium to express gratitude to Missions and Honorary Consuls working closely with the Ministry to ensure the desired outcomes, I would also thank all those who have offered various forms of assistance such as religious bodies and student groups, all working together with the government in an outstanding demonstration of support for a cause which requires our wholehearted commitment and show of unity of purpose.”
