Mafia tactics rock NDC membership registration in Volta Region
There is a seeming cold war between the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC”s) Constituency Chairman for Central Tongu and the Secretary in the Volta Region.
The Constituency Secretary, Addison Dodzi Mornyuie is reportedly, devising means to have the party’s membership process application play his favor.
In a statement issued by the Constituency Chairman, Confidence E. Abotsi, he expressed surprise about the actions of his Secretary and cautioned that such actions will have a dire consequence in the upcoming general elections in 2024.
Below is the full statement as issued.
RE: PARTY MEMBERSHIP PROCESS APPLICATION IN ADIDOME AND MAFI-KUMASE
I have sighted with utmost concern and disbelief a circular shared by the Constituency Secretary, Mr Addison Dodzi Mornyuie
, to the effect that a committee constituted by the Constituency Executive Committee (CEC) as directed by NEC to oversee the SHARING/DISTRIBUTION of the new membership cards of the party to members at the branches, will be in Adidome and Mafi-Kumase on Monday, 28th February 2022 ostensibly to start the process of application by members for the plastic ID card.
My concern is premised on the following, among others:
• The party tasked Constituency Secretaries to type into a database all members of the party as at the time we held the 2019 Presidential Primaries. New admissions into the party will be done later and will be publicly announced.
• The Secretary at a CEC meeting, upon queries from my good self, gave out a figure of 19, 776 as the total strength of the party in the constituency. CEC resolved and directed that the Secretary furnish her with the typed list and the original registers for review.
• In blatant disregard for the directive of CEC, Secretary unilaterally, without the knowledge of any other CEC member nor myself, printed and gave to the branches the registers at the January 30, 2022 Town Hall Meeting and Outreach in Adidome and Mafi-Kumase.
• Upon receipt of the registers from the Secretary, many branches kept calling me and other CEC members that some registered members have not had their names returned in the typed register, and more alarmingly, a large chunk of names, some of which are known members of other political parties have found their names included in the typed register.
• At the next CEC meeting, CEC expanded the membership of the Card Distribution Committee and tasked them to send back to the branches, in person, the source registers that formed the basis for the typed ones for review.
• It will interest you to know that, some of the source registers for the Adidome and MafiKumase Zones of the party are yet to reach the branches for review/auditing. As at yesterday, some of the branches keep calling and complaining that they have still not received the original registers to aid them audit the typed ones. Some also complained that they have found “strange names” in their registers.
• It is thus surprising to note that the Secretary has unilaterally arranged Zonal meetings with Mafi-Kumase and Adidome Zones on Monday to start the process of applying for the plastic party ID cards, whereas the branches’ auditing process has not yet ended. The branch register audit/review current on-going is to make our party register clean and credible.
Election 2024 is paramount to some of us. It could be recalled that the haphazard nature in which the 2015 biometric registration was carried out where some ineligible people have allegedly found their names onto register was partly blamed for our defeat in 2016. We also have to take a cue from the chaotic scenes emanating from the on-going NPP Poling Station elections and take conscious steps to prevent same from happening in the NDC in the Constituency.
As a chairman, I have always taken steps to correct some of these avoidable mishaps behind the scene but they keep being repeated. I am therefore urging all members of the party to remain calm but disregard this exercise of the Secretary for the time being as we ensure that we have a clean register before we start the application process for cards for general members.
There will be opportunity for all who desire to join the party to do so.
Per the Constitution of the
Party, it is only the branches that can admit people into the party; we do not join the party at the Constituency, Regional or National levels, and anyone interested in joining the NDC, irrespective of their previous political leanings, must apply to our branch executives when the party announces for same to be done.
Let us be mindful of 2024. We should not do things that get the party base agitated and weaken our front ahead of the 2024 crucial elections.
In fact there is HOPE. It is a do or die at this point in time.
Confidence E. Abotsi
Constituency Chairman
