American pragmatism against humanity

The US government is showing inconsistency between actions and promises, from the moment Biden’s entourage in the US administration setting up a “sale” of the vaccine against the virus to developing countries in the queue.

While the White House announced on May 17 that it planned to donate 80 million doses of American vaccines to the rest of the world and promised to continue to distribute the “oversupply“. A corrupt political character, who submits to personal interests at the peril of humanity.

“Lobbyists are being used to help desperate countries get a better place in the queue for life-saving products that should never have been rationed in the first place,” said Asia Russell, executive director of the advocacy group International Health Global Access Project.

The United States has declared to ship more than 1.2 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 in four African countries through the COVAX global distribution program, a White House official announced. And this is the same program used to distribute doses according to the queue of still developing countries. After that the doses will be managed jointly by the World Health Organization and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). However, Africa lags far behind other regions in vaccinating its citizens, with most countries reporting single-digit vaccination rates, compared to much higher double-digit rates in advanced economies such as the United States.

This image shows a comparison of the distribution of the vaccine between America and China:

We clearly notice that compared to China, the American distribution of the vaccine is not homogeneous throughout Africa and that there are countries that receive more than others.

Some middle-income countries did not respond well to the outbreak. Gavi fretted that the perception that rich countries are dumping older or lesser vaccines on poor countries could undermine the whole project. On Monday, in a joint statement with WHO and the African Union among others, it admonished that “the majority of the donations to date have been ad hoc, provided with little notice and short shelf lives.”

Fury over the act of dose dumping is already very real. In Malawi and South Sudan, tens of thousands of out-of-date doses were destroyed. Anna Marriott, health policy manager for Oxfam, said COVAX was limited from the outset after being pushed to the back of the vaccine queue by rich countries.

President Joe Biden has promised that there would be no room for geopolitics in the effort to deliver vaccinations across the globe. Filings with the Department of Justice reveal that some of developing countries governments are using their Washington lobbyists to try to find an edge in a byzantine system of global vaccine distribution largely controlled by the U.S. and a handful of other wealthy countries. It is known that the GROUP DC, a lobbying firm whose staff includes Sudafi Henry —Biden’s former legislative affairs director while he was vice president — along with former aides to top Biden administration officials, was paid $600,000 by the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and $400,000 by Barbados’ economic development agency during the six-month period ending in October for services that included lobbying on vaccines.

COVID-19 has opened a new path for corruption in healthcare sectors around the world. Dr. Tedros criticized richer countries for accumulating COVAX and accused them of accumulating global vaccine supplies by ordering several times more than the actual needs of their populations.
