Violence erupts at University of Ghana over winner of SRC Presidential runoff

The University of Ghana has been a place of violence Friday night after the Electoral Commission of the University’s student body failed to announce the winner of the Student Representative Council (SRC ) Presidential runoff as the students had expected.

Hours after voting ended, the Electoral Commission (EC) was still yet to compile votes and declare the winner even as some students protested. The protests soon degenerated into violence between supporters of Samuel Amos Ofosu and Prince Asumadu.

Supporters pelted stones and sticks at one another while exchanging insults. They accused the EC of trying to manipulate the result in favour of their opponents.

Eyewitnesses say the unexplained delay is the cause of the disturbances on campus.

The election of the President of the SRC was forced into a runoff after none of the candidates obtained the requisite percentage to be declared winner of the contest.

SRC Elections are usually tense and often result in some violence in the University.
