VIDEO: Jonathan Mensah scores to help Columbus Crew win Campeones Cup

Columbus Crew captain Jonathan Mensah scored to help the Major League Soccer champions beat Azul Cruz to lift the 2021 Campeones Cup.

Bryan Angulo’s 4th minute own goal and Mensah’s header were enough to give Crew a 2-0 win over Azul Cruz at the Lower.com Field, USA, in the early hours of Thursday.

The champions of the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS) and the champions of Mexico’s Liga MX contest the Campeones Cup every year since 2018.

Angulo turned in a Lucas Zelarayan set-piece into his own net in the 4th minute to put the underdogs ahead.

Mensah then added a second in the 74th minute to put the game beyond the reach of the nine-time Mexico champions.

The Black Stars center-back directed a firm header into the near post beyond the reach of 40-year-old goalkeeper Jose Corona.

Mensah has now led Columbus Crew to two titles since becoming captain; the 2020 MLS Cup and the 2021 Campeones Cup.
