Ghc50K Cathedral Donation: VP Bawumia’s office ‘micromanaging’ National Chief Imam – Report

Various reports are emerging in the aftermath of a donation of Ghc50,000 to the National Cathedral by the National Chief Imam that the office of the top Muslim leader is being micromanaged by the Office of the Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for political purposes.

The National Chief Imam, His Eminence Dr Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu came under heavy criticism from several Muslims after he made a Ghc50,000 donation to support a National Cathedral project only hours following Bawumia’s declaration of support for and donating to same, a move insiders tell MyNewsGh.com was orchestrated for political motives by elements inside the latter’s office.

Similar criticisms were leveled against the Chief Imam when on Friday, July 2, he joined Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on the latter’s visit to Ejura in the Ashanti Region hand in hand on board an Airforce flight after military officers killed three Muslim protesters during protests to demand justice following the murder of one Ibrahim Anyass Mohammed, popularly known as Macho Kaaka.

A Muslim commentator who has been a vocal critic of the Vice President, Abdul Hameed reacted “… Only those who choose to be blind will refuse to see that Mallam’s (Chief Imam’s) office has since become an annex of the Office of the Vice President and it is being manipulated by the elements in that office for their political interest”.

He asked: “What was the response to Mallam’s appeal when our young sisters were stopped from fasting, praying and wearing the Hijab earlier in May by some of our mission schools?”

Ambassador Haruna Atta, a practising Muslim also had a more scathing criticism of the donation:

“To have paraded the centenarian National Chief Imam before cameras to make a grovelling “donation” towards the Akufo-Addo cathedral was not only a dishonour to the Islamic leader personally but a sharp slap and disrespect to the entire Ghanaian Muslim community.”

He added: “When the new mosque at Nima was being constructed – and it spanned many years – no Christian church leader or denomination approached the Islamic community with a donation towards its realization. The Islamic community shouldered its responsibility alone until help stepped from outside to complete it. That is a fact now firmly recorded in our spiritual history. None of the Christian denominations, nor their leaders used the argument of “peaceful coexistence” to step forward to canvass for donations to complete the mosque.”

So far the Office of the National Chief Imam has reacted to the criticism by quoting the Koran to back the donation.
