FRAUD: Fake teachers uncovered in list of names submitted for 1-Teacher-1-Laptop

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has revealed that it has detected attempts by some Directors of Education to defraud the service by submitting to its names of persons who do not qualify to benefit from its distribution of laptops to teachers, known as the one teacher, one laptop project.

The service said that non-teaching staff and fictitious names have been submitted in an apparent attempt to scam the service of the laptops meant solely for in-service teaching staff.

“…Some Metro/Municipal/District Directors of Education in submitting the names of teachers for the laptops have added names of persons who do not qualify, including non-teaching staff or retired or separated staff.

The indications are that in some instances some strange names have been added with fake IDs,” a notice to the Directors stated.

The Directors have been directed to validate the names of beneficiaries and resubmit them for the distribution of the laptops.

The government, as part of efforts, to promote teaching and learning has secured laptops for distribution to teachers under its direction. The move is to promote the use of information technology in teaching and learning in pre-tertiary institutions across the country.
