GPRTU Chairman fights Police MTTD for creating traffic to extort money from drivers
The Kumasi Sofoline Chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Mr. Albert Boamah has accused the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) and Police officers who have been deployed to Sofoline to control traffic of extorting money from the drivers.
Drivers on several occasions have been punished by military personnel for operating in unauthorized places at Sofoline despite the Sofoline transport terminal.
Sofoline GPRTU branch in collaboration with Kwadaso Municipal Assembly Transport Committee embarked on a traffic situation check at Sofoline to control traffic situation.
Speaking in an interview with Pure Fm’s Osei Kwadwo during the operation, the GPRTU Sofoline Chairman Mr. Albert Boamah emphasized that Sofoline traffic is caused by the police officers and MTTD officers who have been deployed to control the traffic situation.
According to Mr. Albert Boamah, recalcitrant commercial drivers are allowed to operate in unauthorized places because the police and MTTD officers who are supposed to enforce the law are extorting money from the drivers.
“The Police and MTTD officers are the cause of Sofoline traffic because without the traffic they won’t get the opportunity to take Ghc10 from each and every driver. They are not here to control traffic and enforce the law but they are here to fill their pockets” Mr Albert Boamah said.
He added that “I have reported their actions to the MTTD commander with video evidence extorting money from their drivers”.
“I always have to come here with my taskforce to control the driver meanwhile those officers have been paid by the state to do the work” he said.
