Homosexuality is not a human right – Sam George champions anti-homosexuality bill in parliament
Member of Parliament(MP) for Ningo-Prampram on Tuesday, Sam George on June 29, 2021, presented an anti LGBTQI bill to the Speaker of Parliament, effectively kickstarting processes by the Parliament to criminalize homosexuality in all its forms ( LGBTQI) in the country.
The bill, dubbed Bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values when passed into law, according to Mr Sam George, “would criminalise the promotion, advocacy, funding and act of homosexuality in all its forms”
Mr George, who had promised to introduce the Bill, described it as a “a landmark legislation that has taken the last 14 weeks working with a fantastic team of professionals to put together.”
The lawmaker, an outspoken anti LGBTQI activist, insisted that homosexuality is not a human right which must be respected but a sexual preference or lifestyle choice that must he prohibited in the country.
“The Bill respects the fundamental human rights of all persons, including those found engaging in the prohibited acts, but spells out a rigid punitive measure in line with our social, cultural and religious stance as a Nation. Let me be clear here, homosexuality is NOT a human right. It is a lifestyle choice. A sexual preference,” he wrote.
Ghana has no express comprehensive law against homosexuality and many usually rely on a law prohibiting “unnatural carnal knowledge” as the law that criminalises homosexuality.
The National Coalition for the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, a vigorous anti LGBTQI group which supported Mr George in drafting the bill, has been at the forefront of seeking legislation against LGBTQI in the country.
