Stop wasting money on MPs to the neglect of teachers – Chief advises government
The Chief of Abura Dunkwa Traditional Area, Nana Asokwa Kwagyire III has chided the government for significantly increasing salaries of Members of Parliament (MPs), Ministers and other top officials and turning a blind eye on teachers’ meager salaries despite several appeals for increment.
He lamented that teachers who are the main key contributors to the country’s development as well as raising many prominent people in the society are being disowned by the government.
Nana Kwagyire expressed disappointment where government pays 6 bilion old cedis to Members of Parliament (MPs) as ex-gratia to MPS compared to teachers who teach for more than 30 years but go home with lesser amounts.
During courtesy call on him by Ghana National Association of Teachers Ladies Society (GNATLAS) as part of its 90th anniversary at Abura Dunkwa, he challenged the government to as a matter of urgency increase the welfare of teachers and empower female teachers.
“The money that is misused during political campaigns can be used to top up to teachers’ salaries to motivate them” Nana Kwagire.
The 90th anniversary was held with the theme “Empowering the Female Teacher, Our Core Mandate in the 21st Century”.
Nana Kwagire suggested to the Directors of Ghana Education and GES to desist from awarding only teachers in the cities but rather award teachers in the deprived communities as well.
On her part, the Vice Chairperson of GNAT in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District, Mrs. Ruth Bernice Akyen made a shock revelation that when it comes to posting of female teachers from the Colleges of Education, Female teachers hardly meet their future husbands when posted to remote areas.
“Some female teachers are posted to hinterlands where there is no electricity coupled with accommodation challenges. We are not saying we shouldn’t be posted but female teachers should be considered when it comes to helping female teachers to rise up” she appealed.
A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Nana Ama Browne Kluste tasked the general public especially parents to add their voices if teachers come up with their challenges to enable the teachers achieve their goal.
“Teachers are the agents for change, especially the female teacher so we need to empower the female teacher to enhance their role as agents for change” She lamented.
