Legon male students advised against dangerous withdrawal method of sex
A medical officer at the Legon Hospital, Dr. Gifty Odame has advised male students at the University of Ghana to desist from coitus interruptus (sexual intercourse in which the penis is withdrawn before ejaculation)
According to her, it is not 100% trusted and cannot also prevent them from been infected with an STD.
Dr. Gifty Odame made this known when she spoke on Accra-based Radio Universe.
She said “It does not prevent STI, it does not prevent pregnancy. Before ejaculation, the semen and sperms comes out and that is pre-ejaculation. Sometimes, there is a tiny bit of sperm in the pre-ejaculation. So before you say, you are ready to pullout, the semen of pre-ejaculation has already come out. Note that it is not 100% effective against pregnancy”.
The Doctor noted that the rate at which young female students are using emergency contraceptives is alarming and called on them to rather talk to Doctors for favourable family planning methods since the emergency contraceptives could bring about some health complications.
“It is alarming the rate at which students are using the emergency contraceptive. It builds up; with time it disrupts your menstrual cycle. Even when you get pregnant you might not know. That’s how we get a lot of ectopic pregnancies. We get a lot of people coming in saying, I am bleeding. You come to the hospital and complain that you have been bleeding twice in a month, the first question we ask is ‘have you used emergency contraceptive?’ Because it is hormonal, it is going to disrupt your cycle. That’s why it’s called emergency contraceptives. In a year don’t use it more than four times,” she counseled.
