How peer pressure pushed me into a chain smoker – Cletus Avoka

Member of Parliament(MP) for Zebilla Cletus Avoka has said that peer pressure pushed him into becoming a chain smoker.

According to him, the association he made immediately after completing his degree at the University of Ghana turned him into a smoker who could not do a day without cigarette.

He said in an inteview on Bolgatana-based A1 radio monitored by MyNewsGh.com that during the time, he could smoke 3 packs of cigarettes in a day.

Cletus Avoka who was part of John Dramani Mahama’s three wise men said he quit smoking after one of his friends was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and was cautioned against smoking.

“… you go to any renowned doctor, he will tell you…don’t do this but do in moderation, do it the little that you can but don’t go in excesses and i think that has been my guiding principle. When i was a very young man, i could smoke three packets of cigarettes a day.”

“So it was after i left university…peer group…there i took the habit of smoking but that didn’t last long,” he said on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio.

“As far back as 1985, i encountered a friend who was not well and when we sent him to the hospital, the doctor said it was TB because of smoking…that was the day i put my cigarettes lighter and cigarette in the dustbin. …So that day, i just put my lighter away, my cigarette away and i said no to smoking.”

Cletus Avoka said he quit smoking some 36 years ago and has decided never to go back to his old ways.
