I didn’t approve Ken Ofori-Atta – Adongo disappointed in Haruna Iddrisu, others

Member of Parliament(MP) for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo has said that he did not participate in the approval of Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister-designate and is disappointed in the leadership of the house especially that of the Minority for giving him the nod for a second time, MyNewsGh.com reports.

In a press conference expressing his displeasure, Hon. Adongo explained that the country is still counting its losses under what he described as a ‘mismanaged’ economy by the Finance Minister designate and hence will be the last person to endorse his re-appointment.

“The consensus was reached at committee, I was not at the committee to ascertain the full facts of how they came by the consensus. But having reached a consensus, it will amount to nothing for me to challenge the decision on the floor and so let the records reflect that I did not approve Ken. Ofori-Atta as our Finance Minister designate and I disagree with our leadership.

Having being a hard critic of his and being aware of the mess he has put us in with the recent one being the Eurobond, it will be suicidal for me to approve his appointment for he to continue to mess up the country up.

My being quiet has nothing to mean that I have been compromised. It was because I have chosen my battle carefully. I disagree with my leadership but I respect their view.”

President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, March 30 sworn into office the Finance Minister as he sets to take office as Ghana’s longest serving Minister in that portfolio.

Parliament approved Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta in a unanimous recommendation by the Appointments Committee of the House.

The committee recommended to the House to approve Mr Ofori-Atta’s appointment.

The report was presented by the Majority Chief Whip, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, on behalf of the Chairman of the committee, Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu as parliament, as a whole, endorsed the report and approved the nomination by a voice vote.

Social media reacts:

The endorsement received varied reactions from social media users as a section of the  users lauded and congratulated the Finance Minister designate on his appointment, with others too expressing worry as to why the NDC Caucus seconded his approval after raising concerns.
