Kumasi Kejetia Traders clash with Management over high ‘chobo’ electricity bills
Tension is mounting Kumasi New Kejetia Market as traders besieged the Kejetia Management office of Kumasi City Markets Limited over high electricity bills suspecting they are being shortchanged.
The traders over the years have complained bitterly over high electricity bill and poor treatment received from the management of the facility.
At least 30 shops on Friday February 26, 2021 were closed down by the management of the facility over non-payment of electricity bills.
The aggrieved traders expressing their grievances in an interview with Pure Fm’s Osei Kwadwo said they cannot pay the bills because they are too high as compared to the electricity gadgets they used in their various shops.
According to the traders, “We have complained about how Kumasi City Markets Limited shares the electricity bills for us but they have failed to address our concerns”.
“Could you believe that all the Kejetia shops have only one metre and the bills are shared by the management not Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This is very bad and it is seriously affecting us” they said.
“Every month, Kejetia Management will come to your shop and check the gadgets we use in our shops and bring us high electricity bill for us to pay. Some of us use only bulb and fan but we pay more than GHc80 every month. This is so pathetic and condemnable. We cannot pay high electricity bill unless they decide to address our concerns”.
They added “If someone is not paying electricity bills the best thing you have to do is to disconnect the person’s light but not to close down his/her shop. They should come and open our shops for us or face our wrath”.
Meanwhile all efforts to speak to Kejetia Management proved futile as they kept tossing reporters from one officer to the other.
