Go and contest for the seat in your fatherland – Mahama Jinapor
Former President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama has told the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Samuel Abu Jinapor to rather go to his father’s hometown in Buipe and contest for the seat there since Gonjas inherit from the patrilineal line.
According to him, Northerners by tradition do not inherit from their mother’s side but rather from their father’s side so it’s imperative that he goes to the father’s side to contest for the seat.
Citing himself as an example, the former President said “When I went to Bole in 1995 to contest as a Parliamentary on the ticket of the NDC they told me Alhaji Gilbert Iddi was the one coming to contest and advised me to go to Damongo where my mother hails from.
“I went to Damongo and met the NDC executives and they looked at me in an awkward manner and finally asked me if I don’t know my father’s home and I replied I know.”
“So they told me Gonjas don’t inherit from their mothers house but their fathers house”.
“I, therefore, went back to my father home of Bole, contested and won to become the MP for the Bole- Bamboi Constituency” the former President disclosed.
He noted that monies were exchanging hands in the Constituency but indicated that the seat belongs to the NDC and that cannot change adding that “No Gonja is a slave and I’ve never heard they have bought or sold a Gonja into slavery”.
