You’ve thrown your monies away – Agric Minister tells Panic buyers of foodstuff
Minister in charge of Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has said persons who rushed to buy food for stocking though at high prices, have only thrown away their monies.
Dr. Akoto stated that there is enough food for purchase due to the success of government’s Agricultural sector support program Planting for Food and Jobs.
Following reported confirmed cases of the novel Corona Virus in Ghana, many Ghanaians have expressed fears of a looming food shortage in Ghana due to the global impact of the pandemic.
The rush to buy foodstuff to stock heightened when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced a lockdown of Accra, Kumasi and other cities in the southern part of the country.
The situation triggered an astronomical increase in the prices of foodstuff.
But speaking to journalists at a press briefing in Accra on Monday covered by MyNewsGh.com, the Agric Minister described the panic buying actions as waste of money because there is enough food in stock to meet the demands of every Ghanaian.
According to him, foodstuff prices would return to normal after a few days saying that “like night and day, once everybody comes back to normality with the assurances that the food supplies are there, these prices are just temporal… They are going to come down. So those of you rushing to buy at two three times the price of what it used to be, you are just throwing money away because the stocks will be there in the market and the food would be there.”
He added that “I can bet you, in two weeks the prices will come down. I am appealing to everybody to be calm because there is no food shortage. Don’t waste your money on unnecessary stock ups of foods, the foods are here in abundance for you every day. It is when you rush that the market women will also increase the prices.”
