Don’t turn your palaces into courts for settling Rape and Defilement Cases – Minister warns
Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Agona West Constituency in the Central Region Cynthia Mamle Morrison has warned against settling cases of rape and defilement at palaces and homes, insisting that every case of rape or defilement must be adjudicated upon at a law court of competent jurisdiction.

For her, the practice where perpetrators of such crimes make appeals to chiefs and opinion leaders and have their crimes forgiven and resolved at home between or among families must stop, insisting that doing so is a bad practice which chiefs and opinion leaders must discourage and rather ensure that such are settled only in law courts with the mandate to do so.
Ms Cynthia Morrison made these comments as part of her address at the Community Dialogue Series on Sexual Violence Against Girls & Boys put together by the Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection, an initiative of her ministry to sensitize the public on rape and defilement and how to resolve such cases at Akyem Amonom near Abomosu in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region.
The Minister bemoaned the practice where perpetrators especially the rich get shielded while the poor are arrested and prosecuted, calling on all to insist on prosecuting perpetrators notwithstanding their backgrounds.

“… Cases like rape. We have realised that when perpetrators or Rape are rich, chief, opinion leaders or are from rich families, chiefs settle the cases at the palace. But they tend to arrest a rapist whose background is poor. If a chief, MP, Minister, or president rapes a person, it should be settled at the law court not the palace,” Hon. Morrison reminded the audience.
