E/R: Angry youth bare teeth over illegal mining

Irate youth of Akyem Hemang, Dome and Gyampomani in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region are up in arms against illegal mining in the communities.

Speaking with MyNewsGh.com, Johnson Appiah who is a youth leader, expressed his worry over how mining companies operating in the area aim at their profits leaving the welfare of the people in the communities unattended to.

“Mining Act 703 and Act 206 outlines ways by which minerals including gold should be mined, we the people of Hemang and surrounding communities will go accordingly for the betterment of the country”, he said.

He further revealed that the irresponsible ongoing mining activities might endanger water bodies that serve the town and two other nearby towns, stressing on some of the negative impacts of mining companies in the nearby towns.

”We invited the Environmental Protection Agency, Water Resources Commission and other authorities of concern and they issued cautions to the companies involved but all fell on deaf ears. If you don’t stop the mining we will protect our water bodies, by all means possible… we can’t allow them to destroy our water bodies”, he stressed.
