KNUST basic wins maiden Junior Science & Maths Quiz

The Junior Science and Maths Quiz is organised by the College of Science KNUST in collaboration with Eridec Ghana.

KNUST Basic School has won the first ever Junior Maths & Science Quiz for Schools in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.

They beat Prempeh, Opoku Ware and Victory Baptist Basic Schools in the final of the competition which saw eight schools vie for honours.

Prempeh Basic had earlier accounted for Rakho and Afaus Lovely Basic School to join two seeded schools for the finals.

The first round involving factorisation of algebra expressions, appeared to have unsettled all contestants who got most questions wrong.

They, however, recovered to make light work of questions on indices, geometry and set theory.

KNUST Basic School’s mastery of Chemistry, especially, the atomic side of elements, pushed them into the lead, scoring 17 points against Prempeh Basic’s nine in the first round.

Though both sides amassed the same number of points in the second and third rounds, it was not enough for Prempeh Basic to outperform KNUST Basic.

The final lap on ICT saw KNUST Basic garner 18 points more to bring their total haul to 70 points, with Prempeh Basic managing 58 points.

Victory Baptist School snatched the third position from Opoku Basic with half a point at 48.5 to 48.

Winners received a trophy, medals and a cheque for 500 Ghana cedis.

Quiz Mistress, Dr. Abena Boakye observed various myths have created a societal fear for the study of science and mathematics, especially, at the pre-tertiary level.

She says the situation leaves a stumbling block in the way of children with potential in the two subjects.

“To overcome this fear we must confront the myths and get to know maths and science well,” she pointed out.
