#PrayersUp: At Least 11 Fatalities Reported In Virginia Beach Mass Shooting, Suspect Identified As Disgruntled City Employee
#Roommates, let us continue to pray for the people of #VirginiaBeach tonight following a mass shooting that claimed the lives of almost a dozen people and left six others injured.
The shooter opened fire this afternoon at the city’s Municipal Center, killing at least 11 people. He was identified as a disgruntled public utilities employee who had worked for the city for years, according to @cnn. He was killed in a gunfight with police.
“This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach,” said Mayor Bobby Dyer. “The people involved are our friends, coworkers, neighbors, colleagues.”
The city’s police chief James Cervera said the shooter was confronted shortly after opening fire on multiple floors of the building. There was an exchange of gunfire with officers, the chief said.
A police officer whose ballistic vest stopped a bullet was injured, according to Cervera.
The shooting happened when citizens were still visiting the municipal center to conduct business. The building where the shooting took place houses the operations building for the city, which include multiple departments.
Police reportedly found a pistol and a rifle at the scene that investigators believe were used in the shooting, law enforcement officials said.
The suspect is thought to have purchased the firearms legally, according to initial information that investigators have gathered.
Six people were hospitalized after the shooting, hospital officials tweeted.
Virginia Beach General Hospital officials said they had five patients there. A patient who was at Princess Anne Hospital was being transferred to Norfolk General Hospital, which is a Level I trauma center.
The FBI is also responding to the incident to provide assistance to local authorities.
Friday’s incident was the nation’s deadliest mass shooting since November.
“We are praying for our city, the lives that were lost, their families and everyone affected,” tweeted Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams. “We are resilient. We will not only get through this but we’ll come out of this stronger than before we always do.”
Trump has been briefed on the shooting, a White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said.
We’ll keep you posted on any updates, Roommates.
