NPP Women MPs Fire NDC Candidate

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) women caucus in Parliament has condemned the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Delali Kwasi Brempong, for making misogynistic comment aimed at Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP.

Mr. Brempong was captured on video as saying that the NPP made a mistake in choosing a woman (Lydia Alhassan) to contest him in today’s by-election following the untimely death of the MP Emmanuel Agyarko.

The NPP Women Caucus, in a statement signed by Chairperson, Sarah Adwoa Safo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, described the comment as “reckless and misogynistic.”

“The caucus condemns, in no uncertain terms, this reckless and misogynistic comment from him. It’s quite surprising that someone who is seeking the mandate of his constituents, a lot of whom are women, to represent them in Parliament, sees nothing wrong with casting aspersions at and insulting women. Yet he expects these same women to go out and vote for him on the D-day, how ironic!”

“Beyond the condemnation, we also demand that he retracts this statement and renders an unqualified apology to, first of all, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, and all women, particularly those of us engaged in active politics. We certainly do not deserve such insults from him,” the statement said.

The caucus said that women have proven their worth in all fields and that said no nation can develop without a significant number of women in public life.

“More worrying is the fact that he is making this denigrating comment against women at a time when a spirited campaign is being waged by civil society organizations and relevant stakeholders, including the Speaker of Parliament, to increase women representation in parliament because they are least represented in the august house,” it added.
