Kwesi Nyantakyi’s ban has brought shame to Ghana – Nii Lante Vanderpuye
Former Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye believes the lifetime ban handed to former Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi by FIFA, has brought ‘shame’ and ‘disgrace’ to the whole country.
Nyantakyi was handed a life ban by world football governing body, FIFA, on Tuesday for violations of Articles 19, 21 and 22 of the FIFA Code of Ethics following the airing of the Anas documentary in which the Wa All Stars chief was filmed taking bribes from undercover reporters.
He was also handed a hefty fine of 500,000 Swiss franc, equivalent to 2.4 million cedis.
Nii Lante, who never saw eye to eye with the former CAF first vice president, believes all Ghanaians must feel ashamed at Nyantakyi’s epic fall from grace.
“People thought I was on a witch hunt and today look at what has befallen our friend, our brother, our fellow Ghanaian. The disgrace and the shame are for all of us as a country and as a people involved in football and in sport,” he said.
The former Minister added that perceived corruption ought not to be taken for granted.
“That is why it is important that when any one of us is doing or is engaged in an act that we know will ultimately lead to any injury in the image and the reputation of the country as a whole, there is the need for us to be proactive in making sure that we deal with the situation and we try to advise that person to reform and to change his way of doing things.”
